WIBBLING WOOLS,

Bury St Edmunds

(Review by Jackie Carreira)

“I always wanted to create the kind of wool shop that I would love to go to myself.”  That was Lyndsey Hurrell’s vision when she opened Wibbling Wools in June 2008.

Set in the heart of historic Bury St Edmunds, Wibbling Wools is a two-storey, yarn-lovers haven.  The main shop area on the ground floor is welcoming and relaxed.  A big, comfy leather sofa under the window allows customers to sit and browse through books and patterns in comfort, or just stop and have a chat about their latest projects.

“I can spend hours in a wool shop, but there isn’t always somewhere to sit,” says Lyndsey.  “I wanted customers to feel at home and take their time – hence the sofa.”  So many customers were taking the opportunity to make themselves at home that Lyndsey has now started ‘knit & natter’ coffee mornings on Thursdays.

Upstairs are two light and spacious rooms set aside for workshops on knitting, crochet, and “…anything else that our customers are interested in.”  One of the rooms is kept free for the artistic side of crafts.  Lyndsey explains, “Since the shop’s been open I’ve met so many amazingly talented people that it inspired me to provide space in the shop for textile art exhibitions.  I’m really excited about promoting our customers creativity.” The first exhibition will open before Christmas.

Lyndsey’s ideal is that “a wool shop should be both an inspirational and a sociable place.”  The balance here is just right.  The atmosphere is certainly warm and inviting, and Lyndsey’s obvious enthusiasm as a knitter is infectious.  The well thought-out stock fills you with ideas, the coffee machine is always on, and the sofa really is comfy.
